By vocation and avocation I have always been technical/left-brained -- number and word puzzles, mathematics, science and engineering, computers -- although an underlying visual orientation gave me a preference for beauty and elegance in graphs, programs, diagrams, formulas and architecture. Since retiring in 1999 I have explicitly pursued artistic/right-brained activities by doing mostly figurative drawing and painting, as well as by combining hemispheres in web design and computer graphics.

In contrast to my analytical tendencies, I tend to let a figure drawing or painting develop in its own way -- sometimes more representative, sometimes more abstract -- the shapes and colors appearing on the paper as I discover the model's pose transformed. I am often surprised, and sometimes even pleased, with the result.
