DeMatha Catholic High School

About

DeMatha Catholic High School is a college preparatory institution (grade 9-12) dedicated to educating young men in the Trinitarian tradition. DeMatha’s historic and ongoing mission is to serve students of differing abilities, interests, and backgrounds from the culturally rich and diverse greater Washington Metropolitan area. DeMatha's students have the opportunity to creatively express themselves through a variety of classes offered by the both the Fine Arts and Music Departments. Courses in the Fine Arts Department (Fundamentals of Art, Drawing, Painting, Advanced Art, Art History, Photography, Digital Photography, Darkroom Basics, Photojournalism and CADD) develop the ability to analyze and comprehend the visual messages of the past and present. Students will be able to construct works of art and design which are balanced in composition, organized by the elements and principles of design and are examples of clear visual. Work is displayed in an annual Art Exhibit. The instrumental music performance classes (Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, Concert Band II, Concert Band I, Advanced Percussion Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble II, Percussion Ensemble I, Sinfonia, Concert Strings I, Voices of DeMatha, DeMatha Harmonics and DeMatha Singers) stress and encourage a high degree of proficiency on the individual student’s instruments. Concerts are held throughout the school year at locations in the Hyattsville area and at regional and national music festivals. Every year, 12-20 students are selected al All-State vocal and instrumental musicians for the state of Maryland.
