2018 Smithsonian Folklife Festival
June 27 – July 1 and July 4 -8

The Smithsonian Folklife Festival, established in 1967, honors contemporary living cultural traditions and celebrates those who practice and sustain them. Produced annually by the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, the Festival has featured participants from all 50 states and more than 100 countries.

Armenia: Creating Home
Take a glimpse into Armenian Culture, greatly influenced by its surroundings, heritage, and ongoing exchange with its many diasporas around the world. Foodways presentations and artisan craft traditions tell the importance of economic and cultural sustainability in the face of change and how these practices create home – both in concept and form.

Catalonia: Tradition and Creativity from the Mediterranean
Human towers. Giant puppets. Fire-breathing dragons. Behind the spectacular cultural expressions of Catalonia, resilient networks of people work together to ensure the vitality of their local cultures and their livelihoods. Join Catalan artists and musicians as they share their public life and expressions of Catalan identity with us. As they say in Catalan, “Fem pinya!” Let’s come together!

GET INVOLVED: Volunteers are needed before, during, and after the Festival. They assist stage managers, help with recording performances, work with participants, support sustainability efforts, and much more. Volunteers must be 16 years or older to apply. The Festival is an excellent opportunity for students who must complete community service/service learning hours.

HOW TO APPLY: To fill out a new volunteer application, please visit www.festival.si.edu/volunteer.
